NATALIE

Hi my name is Natalie Richess im 18 years old. I currently live at the ymca hostel in Bournemouth.

In 2006-2008 I studied diploma in professional catering and A levels in maths, ICT and French. I passed my NVQ level 2 and 3 and also my A levels. But I was pushed into college because I wanted to make my parents proud of me, it was really hard and pressurising to make sure that I wouldn’t let them down because it was really important to me just to see my mum be proud of me.

Youth Forum PDF Print E-mail

Youth Forum is an opportunity for volunteers within VIBE to have a say about their volunteering experience, and to make a difference in their communities.  Currently we are running this in these ways:

 THE SCREAM

An all new newspaper, written and produced by young people.  THE SCREAM editorial group are looking for keen wannabe journalists, photographers and graphic designers to help put together the first issue.  The idea of THE SCREAM is to highlight positive stories about young people in Bournemouth and to challenge some people's stereotypes about all young people being YOBS or HOODIES.

CAMPAIGNING

We support young volunteers who feel passionately about making a difference in their community.  Currently youth forum volunteers are working on these campaign issues;

BAN THE MOSQUITO IN BOSCOMBE

GET A YOUNG PERSON'S PAGE IN THE ECHO

GET MORE THINGS TO DO AND PLACES TO GO FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN BOURNEMOUTH

If you are intersted in getting involved in any of these campaigns contact us!

FORUM

Volunteers have a regular chance to meet together to share ideas, review progress and have a say on what goes on at VIBE.  Youth Forum members also get t o attend and influence important decision making groups.

Life's A Beach which won the MTV BOOM award for Best Community Story.

The Daemon Drink which won the MTV BOOM award for Best Film and The Prince's Trust Award for Best Community Impact.

Climate Change which is currently being used by the British Red Cross in schools.

Add Kolor was a documentary about graffiti shown at a recent conference.

Their current film, Phobias, is due to be finished in the Summer.....

 FilmJunkies Celebrate Award Success

FilmJunkies were rewarded for their good work at the Prince's Trust Celebrate Success Awards.  The group who had struggled with personal issues including low confidence and unemployment turned their problems into something positive.

They met with Vita Nova, a local charity working with recovering alcoholics and spoke to clients about how alcoholism has affected their lives.  What resulted was a play put on by the group promoting sensible drinking.  This was funded by a community cash award from the Prince's Trust.

The play named Daemon Drink was so popular that the volunteers adapted it for a DVD, distributing it to local shools and youth groups.  The film has also won Best Film at the MTV BOOM's Awards.  Following their success they became an official group calling themselves Film Junkies who have a number of short films to their name.  One of the volunteers, Tash hopes volunteering will help provide a platform for a future career.  "I've really got into directing and writing my own stuff and I was thinking of getting a portfolio together," says Tash.  "You wouldn't believe how much confidence it gives you.  So many people have changed since I first met them and if volunteering can work for them it can work for anyone."

Echo Chief, Odeon Cinema & Harry Potter's Soundman judge Bournemouth's first youth film festival

Echo Chief, Neal Butterworth, was among an A-list judging panel last Summer which celebrated the talents of Bournemouth's new Spielbergs.  Mr Butterworth was joined by Odeon Director, Spencer Clark, and Harry Potter Soundman, Jon Hardy, to judge the 12 short film entries which were shown in June at Bournemouth's Odeon Cinema.
The festival, organised by young people, was the first of an annual event to showcase the directorial achievements of Bournemouth's youth.  The selection of films featured a wide variety of subjects and genres.  One of the highlights was 'Freddie' - a documentary about an 87-year-old man from Bournemouth who displays his impressive skills with a zimmer-frame and his insightful thoughts on what it's like to grow old alone.
Another highlight was 'The Daemon Drink' - a short which won Best Film at London's recent MTV Boom Awards in Regent Street.
One Voice 2009 was the first film festival locally to celebrate solely films of the under 25s but Project Worker Angela Reece thinks it's the start of more to come, "Young people have been asking for this for a long time.  The quality of the films in this premiere show that Bournemouth's youth have got a lot of positive things to say and it's great that they want to use media technology to creatively convey their thoughts."
One Voice 2009 Winners:
Best Line - 'Struggle'
Best Message - 'Denis'
Best Soundtrack - 'Plymouth Misadventure'
Judge's Choice - 'A Trampled Rose, A Hidden Gem'

Case Study

David Ellis

I have been doing volunteering for vinvolved, which I help with such things as Event Organizing, Climate change,   FilmJunkies that I do on Mon and Wed. Since being at vinvolved I have learned much about filmmaking and how different issues affect young people in the community in Bournemouth.   In  FilmJunkies I have learnt how to script- write and edit films by using software such as Final cut express and comic life which I learnt though FilmJunkies at Bournemouth vinvolved.Other things we have organized are such events as “Resilience” – (Arts in Action) where a few of us did a 3 day event in Bournemouth Gardens to show people from different ages how Being Resilient can help the community and young people within the community.   This was done though art.  We showed the pubic our ideas and comments though art.

Also I have been working on other projects such as the emergency Sign language.  I did a 30 minute presentation using PowerPoint to show a big group of Red Cross teams how simple Sign language in an emergency can help if there is a person who is deaf.

TEAM and TEAM+ get wet and muddy on their 2009 residential!
TEAM and TEAM+ fell in the lakes, rolled in the mud, bounced on a giant pillow
and walked a tight rope on the 2009 TEAM Residential last week.  A record-breaking
20 young volunteers took a break from their anti-racism campaigning to go and have some fun
at Fairthorne Manor........................
Activities included raft-building and an assault course.  Youngsters as young as 11 teamed up with volunteers
in their mid-twenties to complete the tasks and strengthen friendships.
Highlights were David's breakdancing and Phil falling head first on the climbing frame.......
 - missing the ground by inches!
Here is the full list of award winners from the trip:
Best Teamplayer:  Milly
Rising Star:  Oscar
Most Memorable Moment:  David
Most Effort:  Fotis
Best Newcomer:  Tia
Hidden Gem:  Megin
Most Improved:  Teisha
Resident Comedian:  Henry
High Achiever:  Mariam
Also awarded were Zak, David and Ellie for their amazing youth-led presentations.  Zak led a workshop on the Festival of Flight (to be exhibited at the Bournemouth Air Festival), David led a presentation on Emergency Sign Language and Ellie (one of the youngest) did a talk with Tia to the rest of the group about Rosie Parks - the black lady who was asked to stand on a bus in America so a white person could sit down.

All in all, the 2009 Residential was a big success and everyone is already looking forward to the next one - but lots of hard campaigning to do before the next one guys!

Attention anyone who loves music, organising stuff, team work, sharing ideas and opinions and fancies a spot of volunteeering to make a difference to their community and beyond.........Vibe Live meets every Wednesday night 19.00 - 20.00.

Check out the Vibe Live Myspace www.myspace.com/vibelivebournemouth

Check this out:

Vibe Live was founded by a volunteer called Katie who knew local bands and wanted to raise money to buy a pair of breeding llamas. (Come on they are cute). Anyway she held a gig in Fusion Youth Club, then another one....then another one. Not only did she manage to buy her llamas but she realised that young people wanted to rock out in a safe and secure environment, her band mates wanted a stage to perform on and her creative friends fancied getting some of their art work on posters and flyers. Without even realising it Vibe Live was born. (Without the pain of labour and other such yukky stuff)!!!

So far Vibe Live have been responsible for holding monthly gigs at Fusion Youth Club giving a stage to the likes of Shadowkey, Sammys Got Tourettes, Sepia Daze, Last Summers Day and Framework. They have also become buddies with the guys over at Lava Ignite and help them with their Under 18s (Club Culture) nights. Davi C and his crew have lent Arena 1 and Arena 2 to Vibe Live, allowing the likes of Dr Clue and JK 47, G2G, Urban Fusion Street Crew, Colt 45 and Fitzpain a stage with fancy lights to perform on. Oxjam was given the Vibe Live magic at the I Bar and Leigh and his crew were amazing by providing us with sound and of course a venue for free.

If that wasn't exciting enough Vibe Live and the Arts Institute put on a little shin dig in Bournemouth Lower Gardens for under 18s, the event was called The Takeover and attracted hundreds of people on a beautiful sunny day. The headlining act The Small Town Rivals blew the crowd away and the acoustic tent gave those not interested in rock a place to hang out and listen to chilled out surfer vibes. Big thanks to Tommy Puttick, Matt Sawyer, The Metropolise, James McVey and all others who performed on the day! Vibe Live also got involved in another outside event, Vita Nova's Family Fun Day at Kings Park. Sepia Daze, Neon Abio, Dub Educators, Dr Clue and Ignite the Night graced the stage with some loud and funky performances. The Mayor even rocked out! (Along with Ted Taylor, Children's Champion and MP, who was a top spot)!!

And future stuff........a charity gig at The Winchester for Cancer Research, helping out with the Film Junkies/One Voice Film Festival after show party at the end of the pier and maybe just maybe a little event for Black History Month. So get ready for Vibe Live to take over in your local venue!

What Vibe Live means to its members:

For me Vibe Live is about giving the Bournemouth music scene a boost. Helping bands and the young people of Bournemouth to come together and appreciate the music scene and to give stuff back.

I think Vibe Live is all about bringing people together through music of different genres. I think this helps the community because it gives people somewhere to go. I like it lots.

I think Vibe Live is about helping young people to interact and help other people and also raise money for people and charities.

Vibe Live is all about being inspired, inspired to make a difference to their community.

I think Vibe Live is an amazing chance for anyone interested in live music to set up, perform, take photographs, co-ordinate events, graphic design and event management in their local community.

Homeless Voices

Have you been affected by homeless issues in the past? Are you living in a hostle or have lived in a hostel? Are you passionate about helping others less fortunate then youself? Fancy making a positive difference to the homeless community in Bournemouth? Like to get your point across and voice heard??? Homeless Voices is the project for you!!!

We meet every Friday 16.00 - 17.00 @ Fusion Youth Club for a hot meal and a chat and chill. Then 17.00 - 18.00 @ Vinvolved Offices for project work!

Some examples of our work below:

# Working with "Add Kolor" and putting urban art up on the walls of Sevenoaks and Fortuna House.

# Raising £240 for The Big Issue Foundation @ The Winchester on Sunday 30th May 2010. Bands were amazing,  best crowd in the world and team work at 100%. Big smiles all round!

# Cooking for 65, we had visitors from Texas come and paint Fusion Youth Club, so decided they needed a celebration event at the end of their week of hard work. Tex-Mex was on the menu along with two acoustic acts upstairs and two bands downstairs. They loved it and gave us a big Texan thank you!

# Oh my god!!! We have been successful in getting the Groundswell Grant!! We can now get started on the 'grab bags' these little beauties will be made available to all 16 - 21 year olds in the local hostels/nightshelter. Stuffed full of joy: chocolate, deodrant, body wash and maybe a wee teddy. One of our members came up with this idea after having a rather negative first night experience wishing she had her own stuff to wash with.

# One of our members is hoping to start a young fathers group and is in the process of making this dream a reality! He has applied to the Princes Trust and is waiting to hear back from them.

# Denis was interviewed by Hope FM, please listen to our podcast recording below, and told the universe about all the good stuff Homeless Voices have been up to and of course plug the up and coming gig at The Winchester.

# Homeless Voices will be coming to a youth centre near you with the film and booklet. Giving any young person the insight into what to do if they find themselves homeless!

Case Studies

Hi i'm Phil and I am part of Homeless Voices because I would like to share my experiences with potential young people who are made homeless. This will hopefully help them to not make the same mistakes, others and myself have made. The council turned down my application for emergency housing because I was out of area. The Junction 235 referred me to Fortuna House. If it weren't for the Junction 235 I would be homeless living in London. This service at the Junction is no longer available and I feel strongly about this. Maybe HV can help?

One piece of advice is "make sure you follow your tenancy agreements, it could stop you from losing your accommodation."
I have seen residents get kicked out of hostel accommodation because they did not pay their rent!
Steph. I joined HV because I am in the catagory "young and homeless" and like many other young people I struggled to find accommodation. I was being turned down left right and centre. After sleepless nights dossing on a friends sofa I was finally helped out with somewhere to live. I don't agree with the way I was spoken to by the people that were "there to help" and I want to help others like me to make it easier and less stressful to find somewhere to live. I get a natural high from helping others as homeless issues is a subject I feel very passionate about. I'm excited about the 'grab bags' as I didn't have this available to me when I had nothing. I had to use someone elses second hand products. To give someone their own bare essentials, deodrant or body wash, and know that it will make them feel that little bit better makes me feel good about myself.
Our Grab Bags!
